Unfortunately, pavement does not last forever. Vehicle traffic,
sun, rain, freezing/thawing all contribute to the deterioration of
asphalt pavements. So how do you know what is happening and when
to schedule repairs? The main types of pavement problems and their
solutions are shown below.

|
Alligator cracking
|
|
Age and normal use can contribute to this type of
problem. It usually signals the end of the pavement's life
span. Left untreated, water can pass through the pavement
and deteriorate the underlying soil and base materials.
Resurfacing with Hot Mix Asphalt, and patching of any base failures that
may be present will restore this pavement to it's original
beauty and performance. |

|
Potholes
|
|
Poor drainage, severe freeze/thaw cycles and the
action of vehicle suspensions create this type of problem.
If isolated, it is one of the least expensive repairs.
Removal of deteriorated pavement around the edges of the
pothole, along with a full depth Hot Mix Asphalt patch, will
correct this problem. Roadway drainage issues may need to
be addressed to prevent reoccurrence. |

Base failure
|
|
Even though it appears similar to alligator
cracking, this type of problem is much more serious.
Displacement of the asphalt, along with severe rutting and
surface migration of underlying soils differentiates it from
alligatoring. Poor soils, drainage and excessive loads contribute to this most
expensive of repairs. Overexcavation of the effected area,
along with base restoration and repaving are required.
Often, these failures are due to improper construction
practices or inadequate pavement design. Inattention to
the signs of distress shown above can also contribute. |
